Rumania: Roşia, Scoala de Arte si Meserii Waldorf Hans Spalinger

Mosaiken im FlurThe first art project took place in a school in Rosia, Rumania, in October 2008. Rosia is a small village near the town of Sibiu/Hermannstadt in the region of Siebenbürgen. About 1000 Roma families now live permanently in what is known as the "lower village". This is where a Waldorf School was set up in 1998. Most of the pupils come from large families without regular income. They live under primitive conditions in crowded single-room housing and many are undernourished.

Pupils from all classes from 1 to 10 took part in the art project, divided into morning and afternoon workshops. Tutors from the Alanus University worked together with their students, providing them with the opportunity to learn through direct participation in the project work. Both the morning and the afternoon sessions started with singing. Music provided an opportunity to meet and be interactive and creative as a community across the boundaries of age, class and culture. Four different songs were learnt, some more melodious, others more rhythmic in style. All four could be sung as rounds and were presented in a public performance at the end of the week. After singing the participants worked in class groups on different artistic projects.

The projects undertaken included the following:

  • Mural painting in the canteen and the corridors (on the theme of underwater worlds)
  • A mosaic in the stair-well. A postcard project called "Greetings from the Lower Village" in which students and pupils create their own postcards using lino-cuts. These were subsequently sold in Rosia and throughout Europe in aid of Roma youth work.
  • A theatre performance with masks made by the participants.

In addition, there was plenty of opportunity for the children to develop their own creative ideas and to make spontaneous contributions to the main projects (such as panting on textiles).

Wandmalerei

At the end of each week of the project the results were presented first in the schoolhouse for all the villagers, and then in the gallery "xfuture" in Sibiu/Hermannstadt which was European Cultural Capital in 2007. Teachers were surprised to see how motivated, enthusiastic, happy and concentrated the children were during the entire project. Many of the pupils continued the artistic activities on their own and became increasingly involved in developing their own ideas. The results of a questionnaire filled out by the teachers, and our own systematic observation clearly registered a substantial change in the children's social behaviour and lower levels of aggression. Several of the teachers remarked how some of the children appeared in a new light as a result of this work.
